Why your runway lives in a spreadsheet you don't trust

Every few weeks a non-finance founder rebuilds the runway model, squints at the answer, and quietly discounts it. The spreadsheet holds the burn; it does not hold the floor you will not cross, or the reason that floor exists — so it produces a number without a verdict.

A runway model tells you months of cash. It does not tell you whether that is enough, because “enough” is a line you set for a reason the cells never captured. Hold the line and the reason in Unl, and the read stops being a number to second-guess and starts being an answer you can act on.

The rebuild tax

The distrust is rational. A founder who does not live in finance re-derives the formulas each time, is never quite sure a cell is stale, and so treats the output as a rough steer rather than a call they can bank. The model is redone precisely because it is not trusted, which keeps it from ever earning trust.

Industry research suggests founders outside finance lose hours a week wrestling a sheet for cash-flow and runway — time spent rebuilding, not deciding.

What the sheet leaves out

A runway number is only a decision once it meets a floor: the months of cover below which you stop hiring, or slow spend, because a bad month must never threaten payroll. That floor is the judgement. It is nowhere in the spreadsheet.

So the sheet answers “how many months?” and leaves the real question — “is that above or below my line, and what do I do about it?” — for you to answer again from memory.

The read that arrives judged

Ratify the floor once: “keep at least seven months of cover, because that is one full hiring mistake plus a slow quarter, survived.” The next read of your live figures does the sizing for you — cover now, distance to the floor, and the reason the floor sits at seven.

The spreadsheet does not disappear; it stops being the thing you distrust. The judgement moves out of the cells and into a criterion you set deliberately and can see applied.

A runway spreadsheet is distrusted because it holds the burn but not the floor you refuse to cross; through Unl the floor and its reason are applied at read time, so the number arrives as a verdict against your own line instead of a figure you re-derive and discount.

Reads through Unl arrive with measured context — in the presence of the decisions you’ve already settled. The reach lane is live: one box, paste anything. If it speaks MCP, Unl can reach it. Readings arrive unprompted, the data beside the criterion; Unl is a courier, not a warehouse, and keeps only your keys and the frame.

Questions people ask

Why don't I trust my own runway spreadsheet?

Because you rebuild it from memory each time and can never be sure a cell is current, so you treat the output as a rough steer. It also stops short of the real question: it gives months of cash but not whether that clears the floor you set, which is the part that would make it trustworthy.

How do I get a runway number I can act on?

Attach the floor and its reason to the read. Ratify “at least seven months of cover, because that is one hiring mistake plus a slow quarter survived,” and the live read returns cover, distance to that floor, and the reasoning — a call you can bank rather than a figure to discount.

Can AI keep track of my runway without me rebuilding a model?

Yes. Read through Unl, your live cash and burn arrive measured against the floor you ratified, so you are not re-deriving formulas each month — you are seeing the same criterion applied to fresh numbers, with the why still attached.

What does my runway spreadsheet leave out that makes it hard to act on?

The floor you refuse to cross. It holds the burn and the balance but not the cover you mean to keep, so the number never says ‘act now’. Held in Unl, the floor is in the read, so runway arrives as a distance to your line.

What this is

Think inside your AI world — you stay in command

Unlimitless (Unl to friends) holds what you've settled, reads what your tools are showing, and catches what's changed out in the world — and hands your AI whatever bears on the work, the moment it's needed, without you asking. The right thing, in front of the model, unprompted, with you in command of the call. So you keep moving toward what you set out to build, on top of everything you've already decided.

It plugs into Claude, Claude Code, ChatGPT and Cursor as an MCP connector. Quick to connect, in a couple of steps.

Unlimitless is open now to invited Alpha. Apply for the Beta waitlist to come in ahead of the full launch:
