Why the commit number is a promise nobody can keep
“Commit” is meant to be the strong word — the deals you’d stake your name on. In most pipelines it’s applied on confidence, not evidence, so the commit number is a promise built partly on hope. A promise made before the evidence exists is one nobody can keep, however sincerely it’s given.
The value of “commit” is that it’s supposed to mean something harder than “likely.” That hardness comes from evidence — a signed order form pending, procurement in motion, a date agreed.
