Why the daily standup became status theatre
The standup had one honest purpose: surface a blocker fast enough to clear it today. Most standups have drifted into something else — a round-robin of “yesterday I…, today I…, no blockers” recited to the ceiling. The drift isn’t laziness. A blocker only means something against a criterion, and the recital format has nowhere to put the criterion.
A four-person team stands in a circle and each person narrates activity. The word “blocked” gets used, but it means something different to everyone — and nothing gets escalated because no one knows whose criterion it crosses. What was the standup supposed to do?

Why does it curdle into theatre?
Because a status recital with no criterion attached can’t distinguish an inconvenience from a threat — so the team either escalates everything and drowns, or escalates nothing and misses the one that mattered. Faced with that, people default to the safe recital: report activity, claim no blockers, sit down.
Say you’re an engineering lead who has actually settled the definition: a blocker counts only if it stops a committed sprint goal, not merely something that’s annoying. That criterion lives in your head. In the standup circle it can’t be applied to nine people’s updates on the fly, so the definition goes unused and the recital wins.
What does a measured standup surface instead?
When the team’s own definitions are held where a read can reach them, the question changes from “what did everyone do” to “what crosses a line we agreed.” The read comes back naming the one item that stops a committed goal by your definition — and stays quiet about the eight that don’t.
